All 40 beds of the combined Demonstration Gardens are idle, waiting for the warmth of spring to set things growing again. They look beautiful with their covering of snow. Well, OK, they would look beautiful if it happened to snow. You’ll see!
In truth, a couple of the beds are supporting some winter plants. There’s garlic growing, and cover crops in a number of the beds, but during these low light months, not much is actually growing. Waiting really is the operative word.
The first 2019 meeting of the Demo Garden Planning group is on Monday, January 14th, 12:30 pm- Woodstock Wine and Deli, 4030 SE Woodstock Blvd. All are welcome! A few weeks after that we’ll be back at the garden planting seeds for our earliest veggies. We’ll be using the old greenhouse again this year, and ferrying seedlings to the Annex, and harvest back. Now, though, gardeners are studying the seed catalogs (hopefully in front of a warm fire) to decide what should be ordered for this year.
In the annex, the remaining path border material has been purchased so we can complete the full circle of paths, and have enough remaining to make the connections to the shed and eventually the greenhouse. We also received the donation of a truckload of river rock which will allow us to continue lining the pathways. Those of you interested in a little cool weather work, watch for an announcement of a workday soon to get started on these items.
February will also mark the planting of caneberries in three beds at the annex, followed closely by blueberries. Many of the perennial beds will be planted for the first time this spring. Our Color Circle designers will be preparing the central focus of the garden as well.
Yes, there will be a lot of activity in the coming months, but for now the garden is resting. Now where is that snow?
