That’s Incredible!

Incredible volunteers! Incredible results! An incredible effort from over 150 Master Gardener volunteers resulted in a truly Incredible Edibles Plant Sale on Saturday, May 5th. Thank you!

We rolled out the sale for the 7th year and once again we reached our goals of offering a positive community event celebrating home-grown goodness, increasing awareness of the Master Gardener Program and our Chapter, providing resources to the public in how to grow edibles successfully and sustainably, all the while raising funds to support the OSU Master Gardener Program and our community outreach mission.

The day started with over 300 eager shoppers circling the block waiting to buy prime, organic veggie starts. Over 500 shoppers had entered the sale in the first 20 minutes! Woo-wee! By days end nearly 1500 people experienced the “Incredible”. All went smoothly thanks to the great planning and stellar attention and effort from so many committed volunteers.

Roughly 200 people had their questions answered at the MG Clinic Booth (and many more in the sales area), dozens of kids investigated bugs, worms and planted seed at the Kids Grow tent, and each Plant. Grow. Eat workshop had an audience who walked away with usable techniques and inspiration for the edible gardener.

Everyone contributed in so many ways...planning, leading, promoting, planting, creating, designing, organizing, soliciting, setting-up, welcoming, answering, tallying, selling, teaching, sorting, accounting, cashiering, trouble shooting, serving, lifting, inventorying, hauling, and cleaning until the last remnant of our edibles celebration was hauled and tucked away! Thanks to a tremendous effort from everybody - it looks like - when all is said and done - that we will have earned over $16,000 (including over $3,000 in raffle ticket sales – YEAH Raffle Team and over $1,600 in merchandise sales - HOORAY Merchandise Team)!

Many have asked about our leftover plant starts (those leftover from the nearly 15,000 that we sold!). In addition to earning funds, we also aim to provide other non-profit organizations with lush, viable plant starts for their community outreach projects. Recipients this year were area school gardens, social service agencies, Portland Community Garden Produce for the People plots, and the Oregon Food Bank who in turn distributes plants to those who grow food for the food bank. See, the ‘Incredible’ keeps on spreading!

Beyond our outstanding group of volunteers, we also extend our utmost thanks to Westminster Presbyterian Church for hosting our event, Orchard Supply and Hardware, our musicians, vendors, guest chefs (thank you Kristen and Joe), and generous donors! Immense thanks to all for ensuring an incredible community event!

Incredible Inspiration for Your Harvest

It won’t be long until you have a bounty of veggies sitting on your kitchen table. Once there, you may ponder what to do with all those beets, green beans, potatoes, and dare we mention zukes?! Well, those of you who were lucky to sit a spell in the Plant. Grow. Eat. tent at the Incredible Edibles Plant Sale got a dose of inspiration on how to use your hard-earned harvest from presenter Kristen Rasmussen de Vasquez – who presented ‘Picnic Worthy Harvest Eats”. Others were fortuitous enough to sample the tasty spreads and salads Kristen prepared when she delivered them to our IE volunteer lounge. Now we all can reap the rewards of Kristen’s culinary creations as she has kindly shared the recipes! See the recipes here!
