“Hop Cultivation: Techniques for the Home Gardener”*
Come enjoy this special evening as Shaun Townsend, an Oregon State University hop breeder, will describe techniques for producing both ornamental and brewing hops for the home gardener. He will highlight site selection, trellising ideas, potential pest and pathogen problems, and the timing of harvest for home brewers. He will also share information on his Aroma Hop Breeding Program at OSU, which is developing new hop cultivars that are adapted to Oregon growing conditions, with a focus on essential oil quantity and quality. Ultimately, new aroma hop cultivars that appeal to the craft beer industry will be available for Oregon hop growers.
Shaun Townsend is an Assistant Professor (Senior Research) in the Hop Breeding and Genetics program at OSU. He has been with OSU since 1999. He works closely with the Food Science and Technology Department to characterize the chemical profile of breeding selections, evaluate new techniques for assessing the brewing potential of experimental genotypes and explore the role agronomic management might play in essential oil quantity and quality. Shaun also works closely with hop geneticists to identify and adapt new molecular biology technologies to hop breeding.
NOTE ABOUT LOCATION: Due to the historic nature of the building and the ballroom being on the second story, the entrance is not directly ADA accessible. The entrance to the ballroom has a couple of stairs, a walkway, and then another short flight of stairs. Once in the ballroom, all doorways are wide enough for ADA accessibility.
FOOD AND DRINK: A light menu of food will be offered in the Village Ballroom, along with a no-host bar (beer, wine, hard cider, and non-alcoholic beverages). Speaker Series Coming Up…
Our Speaker Series takes a break in August and then resumes on Tuesday, September 10th, at TaborSpace, 5441 SE Belmont, for our annual ‘Harvest to Table’ guest chef presentation.
After carefully tending and toiling in your veggie plot all season you are will finally be reaping rewards with an abundant harvest. You will need inspiration to bring your harvest to the table.
Join Jim Dixon, a self-proclaimed “recovering” food writer, cook, and owner of Real Good Food.
Jim says “Real good food isn’t magic. It takes time, practice, and the right ingredients.” Come for an evening of inspiration as Jim guides us in simple techniques bringing the goodness of our harvests to the table.
Our Community Demonstration Garden and Annex are in high production as summer makes way. Our harvests have yielded over 500 pounds of produce to date. Lettuce, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, chard, green onions, pac choi, peas, radishes, and summer squash have made their way to local food banks.
Amid the flourishing harvests, volunteers to the garden have been diligently searching and destroying larva of the cabbage butterfly and the adult striped cucumber beetle in order to keep damage from these pests minimal. The garden is a great place for hands-on entomology study!

The Annex garden is looking glorious as it gets ready to be part of the Backyard Habitat Certification Program’s Open Gardens tour. The Annex is the proud recipient of Silver Certification from the Backyard Habitat Program. Come see all that was incorporated in the Annex garden to meet the criteria to qualify for a Silver Certification. You can also check out our dry farming trial and see our edibles beds too!
