Spread the word: free soil testing and blood lead level testing event this weekend 10/15/16
Residents can bring in soil from their gardens, yards or kids play areas for lead testing, and there will also be free blood lead level testing on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the East Portland Community Center, located at 740 SE 106th Avenue in Portland.
There will also be activities for kids, and experts will be on hand to share gardening advice and information about avoiding metals exposure in the garden.
While heavy metal contamination in urban soils has been an issue for a long time, new concerns prompted by the air toxics issues in Portland led DEQ’s and Governor’s Regional Solutions Team to convene several agencies, including Metro, to put on an event like this.
The event is taking place rain or shine, and Spanish translation is available. For more event information and about how to collect soil samples, check out the attached handout.
