Demo garden and blooms

Multnomah County Master Gardeners have supported a demonstration garden in Southeast Portland since 2008. The garden focuses on teaching the community how to use safe, sustainable gardening practices to grow food and ornamental plants. We conduct garden tours, answer gardening questions with research-based information, experiment with gardening techniques and share our findings. Garden produce is donated to organizations that assist community members in need. Gardening classes are offered to Master Gardeners and community members. Come visit us, ask your gardening questions and learn with us. The garden is open to the public.

Visitors to the garden can learn by observing or working side-by-side with Master Gardener volunteers. Continual improvements to the garden provide a variety of learning opportunities for all gardeners and help all to expand their gardening knowledge. The Demonstration Garden showcases:

  • Ornamental and edible plants

  • Planting techniques

  • Raised bed and container gardening

  • Cover crops and garden preparation

  • Dry farming practices

  • Gardening to attract pollinators

  • Composting methods

A planning group meets twice monthly to evaluate progress and plan for the future.  Each day we are open, one of our Master Gardeners volunteers serve as the lead to set up for the day and document the work we accomplish. There are many gardeners with abundant experience to provide guidance. Master Gardeners and community members are welcome to visit and work at the Demonstration Garden.  We hope we see you there soon!
