Join our November Speaker Series as Malcolm Hoover, co-director of Black Futures Farm, shares the story and experiences of this clean energy community farm in Portland’s Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood, on the same campus as our Demonstration Garden. Black Futures Farm belongs to the Black Food Sovereignty Coalition. Founded in 2018, it builds on a decade of work by local Black farmers, food justice activists and community organizer, and serves as a hub for Black and brown communities, helping to confront the systemic barriers that make food, place and economic opportunities inaccessible.

Malcolm Hoover, co-director of Black Futures Farm found his way to farming almost by accident. A U.S. Navy veteran, he worked in city government and as a schoolteacher in Oakland before taking a job at the Oregon Food Bank in 2017. Adjacent to the Food Bank was a farm named Unity Farm run by Art Shavers and Shantae Johnson who introduced Malcolm to rewards of urban farming by and for the Black community. Malcolm is a father, grandfather and husband and is presently working on his next book "Love poems for war times: a practical handbook for community organizing.”
