Gardening with Fall and Winter Flowering Plants

Even at forty degrees on a January day in the garden, there can be inviting spots of color to discover and enjoy. Join our January Speaker Series as Fred Nilsen, retired director of the Hoyt Arboretum, inspires as he shares examples of fall and winter plants that provide seasonal interest with colorful blooms, foliage, and bark.

Fred Nilsen spent his career working for the City of Portland Parks and Recreation, becoming City Arboriculturist in 1986, and managing Hoyt Arboretum and Forest Park. Under Nilsen’s leadership, Hoyt Arboretum significantly expanded its tree collections.  Parks and volunteer crews built miles of trail in Forest Park, Marquam and other natural areas.  Hours of work went into removal of invasive species, and together with Friends of Trees volunteers, thousands of trees were planted.

Since retiring, Fred has continued his involvement with Friends of Trees and the Leach Botanical Garden. The focus in Fred’s own garden is on collections of trilliums, snowdrops, epimediums, daphnes and some unique plant specimens.
