Speaker: Sharon Frey, co-owner, Frey's Dahlias
For some of us, dahlias have never gone out of style…while others are just now re-discovering or have a new-found appreciation for the dazzle these beauties can bring to the garden from summer to first frost. Native to Mexico, this tuberous plant is a grand performer in the garden or container and makes stunning bouquets. With thousands of cultivars in a wide range of flower forms, colors and sizes, there is a dahlia for every garden type and gardener’s taste. Join us as Sharon Frey, co-owner Frey’s Dahlias, shares how to successfully plant, grow, harvest and store dahlias. Sharon will discuss when and how to plant dahlia tubers, care tips from staking to fertilizing, plus harvesting tips to bring the blossoms from garden to vase. She will also show how to properly divide and store tubers for the winter. Sharon will also bring a selection of plants for purchase. They will be available starting at 6:30pm and following her presentation.
Frey’s Dahlias is a family-owned business that was established in 1991 in Turner, Oregon, by Bob and Sharon Frey. The business has evolved over the years to include many Home and Garden shows up and down the valley and shipping tubers worldwide. Last year saw their greatest cut flower sales to local people. Frey’s has 2 ½ acres of dahlias with over 200 different varieties. Their gardens are open to visitors during the mid-August through mid-October bloom time.
