Maintaining lichen diversity in an era of global change*

Lichens are often overlooked, but they are beautiful and fascinating organisms. Join our October Speaker Series, as Jesse Miller, Evergreen State College presents. Jesse’s presentation will focus on the roles lichens play in ecosystems and in society. He will highlight some basic approaches to lichen identification and address some common questions about lichens. In addition, he will also discuss how lichens can be used for environmental monitoring, and cultural uses of lichens. Finally, Jesse will address global change threats that lichens face, and what we can do to conserve them.

Jesse Miller has worked with lichens since 2007. He is currently a member of the faculty at The Evergreen State College and previously worked as the lead state botanist for the Washington Department of Natural Resources, providing scientific guidance on the conservation and management of the state’s rare plants, lichens and fungi. He previously taught ecology and statistics at Stanford. Earlier in his career he worked as a field botanist and lichenologist in Oregon and California. He completed his Ph.D. in plant ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2016. Jesse’s research interests include the effects of global change factors such as altered wildfire regimes and climate change on old growth forest lichens.
